Santa Fe Christian headed out to Palm Springs to take place in the 2018 Champions Invitational held at Terra Lago Golf Resort every season. The Champions Invitational brings out the best golf teams in the Western United States, and boast past individual Champions Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and Beau Hossler. It is a highly competitive tournament which consists of 54 holes of golf over two days. This is SFC third year participating in the Champions Invitational.
This years tournament encountered some of the toughest playing conditions in the tournaments history. Constant wind blowing at 30 mph, with gusts in excess of 40-50 mph made it very difficult to stand, let alone hit a golf ball. SFC struggled through the tournament, along with every other team, seeing some of the highest scores in the tournaments history. The Eagles were led by Matt Almquist who posted a three round total of 250, placing him tied of 81st, finishing in the top third of the tournament. Nick Cable and Spencer Rydin finished closely behind with scores of 254 and 255, placing 105th and 109th respectively, well within the top half. Ian Crosbie will be pleased with his play as well, playing to his handicap in tough conditions, and breaking 90 for the first time in his final rough. Brook Gray joined the Eagles with solid play as well on the final round, carding two birdies.
As a team, the Eagles finished the tournament in 33rd place out of 45 teams. It was a very difficult weekend playing in tough conditions, with some incredible teams from all over California, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas. It is a very respectable finish for the Eagles, who will look to use the tournament to spring board them into a strong finish in League Play, and try to retain the CIF title for the 3rd year in a row.
