The Eagles Qualified as a team for the 3rd year in a row for the CIF Finals tournament held annually at Admiral Baker North Course. SFC is the two time defending Division 3 champion, and looked to retain their title. The two day tournament started our a little slow for the Eagles, with none of the members playing their best. The day was all about damage control, and the Eagles managed to finish day 1 in second place, making the cut, and keeping first place La Jolla Country Day within striking distance. SFC would need to make up 6 shots if the team was to be crowned for a third straight year.
Day 2 started out hot for the Eagles with 5 birdies from the team on the first 3 holes. LJCD held firm with a couple birdies of their own early, and half way through the day, SFC had cut the lead in half and were trailing by only 3 shots. As the round got closer to the end, the Eagles where still just a little bit behind the Torrey's. A couple of bad breaks on the final holes of the day stretched the lead back out, ending the comeback attempt. SFC finished the tournament as runners up in Division 3 behind the Torrey's of La Jolla Country Day. SFC end's another successful team season, boasting another Top 15 team in San Diego county.
Individual highlights of the tournament go out to two Eagles, Matt Almquist and Spencer Rydin. Almquist had a set of hot clubs on Day 2, carding a three under par (-3) final round of 69, equaling the school record for lowest single round at CIF Finals. Rydin also had a great final round, and was looking to match Almquist's 69 with one of his own. A bad break on his final hole of the day dropped him back to an even par round of 72, combined with a solid first round, placed Rydin tied for 18th overall on the leaderboard. The solid two day showing from Spencer saw him qualify for the Sounthern California Regional Tournament next week at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena, a feat only done one other time in the history of the Program.
