On Wednesday night the Eagles celebrated Senior Night when the took on Pacific Ridge. The 1st set started well at 4-5,5-6, 8-12 behind the stellar serve receive & defensive play of Sophomore Jake Tahimic until Pac Ridge Senior setter Wes Corbeil took over with his jump serve scoring 8 straight points to 22-9. Multiple Pac Ridge players and rapid fire jump serving was too much to overcome in the 1st set. In the 2nd set the Eagles never answered the bell stumbling out of the blocks at 1-6, 3-7, 4-12, 6-17, finishing 11-25. The Firebirds were working on all cylinders passing, setting, serving, blocking, and playing with great defense. During the 3rd set the Eagles righted the ship, keeping a steady lead 5-4, 9-5, 13-10, 15-11, 17-4, 18-16 behind monster play at the net by Senior Shane Ryan, Sophomore Gunnar Martin and Freshman Chase Herring. Twin Towers Martin and Herring put the clamps on Pac Ridge attack combining for 4 blocks and 3 kills. Newcomer Shane Ryan celebrated Senior Night by providing the crowd with 4 thunderous kills in the 3rd set. He wreaked havoc with his monster vertical leap and propelling his block to force Pac Ridge to alter their attack. Sophomore Jake Tahimic cleaned up behind the blocking walls with pinpoint digs. In the end, Pac Ridge’s Andrew Green’s jump serves proved too lethal but closing out the match with 8 straight points and helping Pac Ridge to a 25-19 victory. Coach Burich said, “Ryan, Martin and Herring were a 3-headed monster at the net in the 3rd set; one or two providing a distraction while another would get the job done hitting or blocking. It’s going to be awesome to watch these guys develop together in the future!”
