The 2018 Fall Sports Season concluded this weekend after Cross Country returned from the State Finals in Fresno. Boy's Water Polo, Girl's Tennis, Cross Country, Girl's Golf, Girl's Volleyball, and Football all had seasons to remember! We remember the festivities below:
Boy’s Water Polo finished 14-13 in the regular season, they secured the 9th seed in the CIF Division 2 Championship Tournament. After a tough loss to the 8th seed Ramona on Halloween Night, they were eliminated. Throughout the season, they were led by Seniors Logan Kightly, Luke Moody, and Jacob Sommer. Logan Kightly was featured in the San Diego Union Tribune for his leadership throughout the season (feel free to jump over to the Boys WP page on the Talon to check it out).
Girl’s Tennis battled injuries all year long but, they rallied for an incredible finish of 11-5-2. They lost their first team playoff match against a powerful Orange Glen team 15-3. However, the SFC Doubles Team of Cami Stichler and Bella Raiszedeh placed 2nd in the Pacific League Tournament. They rolled their way to the finals against Classical Academy, and lost a close finals match 8-4. Girl’s Tennis graduates a fantastic senior core in Ella Stichler, Cami Stichler, Katherine Olah, Anna Clary, and Janae Cipolla.
Girl’s Golf had an incredible finish to their first season ever! They were led by Senior Rory Derr as they captured the Coastal League Championship on October 15th. Rory finished the season with an average of 6 over par on the Eagles campaign to this historic season. The Eagles lose Rory Derr, and Peyton Steele next season, but are looking forward to a great year next year.
Girl’s Volleyball set out on a mission for a CIF Threepeat this year. After a tough string of opponents in late August and early September, the girls kicked into high gear as they rolled through October. With a 2016 CIF Open Division Championship, and a 2017 CIF Division 1 Championship-the Eagles took on Westview for the 2018 CIF Division 1 Championship. On November 3rd, they captured their 3rd straight CIF Championship. Coach Amanda Miles on the SFC Athletics Podcast said quite simply, “This team loves each other”. It’s been a memorable season to say the least, and the Eagles graduate Sara Jones, Abby Phillips, Alice Martenson, and Anaree Smith-three of which are moving on to play College Volleyball.
Cross Country had a historic season with the first time both XC teams qualifying for the State meet. The SFC Boys had their best season ever finishing 2nd at the SD CIF Championships. The Girls however, won the D5 CIF Championship, and placed 4th overall in the California State Meet. The Girls rolled through the season, winning nearly every competition-their CIF Championship was the largest margin of victory of any team that day. Coach Kloer reflected on the season: “It is such a joy and an honor to watch this team sacrifice for their teammates, achieve their goals, and honor God with their actions.” The Eagles only lose two Seniors in Nadia Forougi and Trenton Leslie, so the future looks bright.
Finally, Football had an incredible season as well. The Eagles captured the Coastal League Championship with a regular season of 6-3. They entered the playoffs as a 6th seed and beat two top teams in Rancho Buena Vista and Monte Vista. The Eagles entered the CIF Semi-Finals against a great Central Union football team. After trading touchdowns, the Eagles came up short on their deep playoff run. Led by a core group of Seniors in Caden Gietzen, Chase Baptista, Jack Miles, Will Littlejohn, Parker Crawford, Austinn Rosetti, Cannan Matsimoto, Michael Linguadoca, Will Burich, Jack Bosman, Josh Peterson, Charlie Wislar, Caleb Johnson, and Carson Drake-the Eagles produced a truly unforgettable season. Head coach John Wallace was quoted saying, “My heart is full! What this group overcame this year and how far they came was remarkable.”
That’s all for Fall Sports, stay tuned for a fun and hopeful Winter!
