Softball took on Orange Glen on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Emily Herrod got the start for the Eagles. A Patriot batter hit a grounder right back and bounced off Herrod’s leg and allowed the baserunner to reach first. That runner was able to score before the inning was over to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The bottom of the 1st inning started off with a single by Senior Brooklyn Hamilton. A pinch runner came in and advanced to 3rd base on a passed ball. A hit by Junior Katie Helig scored a run. Junior Natalie Navarro came in as a courtesy runner for the catcher Helig and took second base on another Orange Glen passed ball. Sophomore Abby Roy was up and laid down a bun that resulted in a wild play. A base hit by Emily Herrod scored 2 runs. Sophomore Reagan Hamilton hits an RBI single to bring the tally up to 5-1 before the inning ended. Herrod recorded 2 strikeouts before allowing a double. The baserunner was able to get to third before she walked the next batter. The Eagles were able to get the third out before allowing a run. The Eagles weren’t able to get anything going in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The top of the 3rd inning started with two ground balls straight to Senior Lauren Johnston who threw both runners out at first. Herrod recorded another strikeout to end the inning. The Patriots were able to force the Eagles into 3 straight outs in the bottom of that inning. Orange Glen tried to ignite a spark in the top of the 4th. The first batter reached on an error and the next batter laid down a bunt. The Patriots now had runners on first and second before a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. A single scored a run before inning ended. During the bottom of the 4th the Eagles, the first two Eagles got out before Lauren Johnston smoked a triple. Johnston was tagged out at home trying to score on a passed ball. Neither team got anything going during the 5th inning. The top of the 6th inning saw Herrod load the bases before Brooklyn Hamilton came in to pitch. Hamilton allowed a run to score off a bunt before she was able to get out of the inning. The Patriots were closing the gap and the Eagles needed to score some runs in the bottom of the 6th. SFC was able to score 2 runs that inning. Orange Glen answered by scoring 2 runs with two outs in the top of the 7th before a strikeout ended the game. The Eagles held on to win 8-5.
