The Lady Eagles are now 8 – 0 - 1 on the season as they enter the Spring Break week, a tremendously successful start to their 2024 campaign. The Eagles got to this record with a hard-fought win over Canyon Crest Academy. The Eagles entered the game on an undefeated roll and CCA, a higher division team, had been struggling of late. None of that mattered after the first pitch.
The Eagles jumped out to any early one run lead in the top of the first when lead-off hitter Bryn Henson walked. Bryn continued her aggressive base running advance on a steal. Maddie Binnie then drove in Henson for the first run. The Ravens responded with a 2-run homer from Alexis McNamee in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
Raven’s pitcher Carrie Krummen then went to work neutralizing the Eagles offense while the Ravens added one run in the third inning and 3 more in the bottom of the fifth. CCA led 6 to 1 as the teams entered the top of the 6th. As the Eagles gathered before the top of the inning Coaches Bennett, Hedjuk, Cox and Harang could be heard reminding the team that this game was not over and that they believed in the girls to turn it around. Message heard.
Maddie Binnie took the coaches words to heart and led off with a double. Maya Tyszkiewicz followed up with a single bringing Binnie home. Kayla Crecion then laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit. Torin Bennett followed with a 4th consecutive hit bringing home Tyszkiewicz. Hannah Muscat then drove in Crecion. The Eagles added 3 in the inning cutting the lead to 6 to 4.
Olivia Anderson came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth following a good effort by Torin Bennet who struck out seven in her 5 innings of work. Anderson shut the door in the sixth with 2 strike outs.
In the top of the seventh the senior leadership continued as Bryn Henson opened the inning with a home run over the right field fence to cut the lead to one run sparking the Eagles rally. The SFC faithful were getting louder and so were the SFC bats. Olivia Anderson singled in her at bat. With one out, Maya Tyszkiewicz continued her hot start to the year with single, her third hit in a 3 for 4 day. Kayla Crecion then delivered another great bunt for a single (also having a 3 for 4 day) and the bases were loaded for Torin Bennett. Torin’s single to center field tied the score. Hannah Muscat then stepped to the plate and delivered a single to center scoring two runs and giving the Eagles an 8 to 6 lead. Muscat had 3 RBIs in the game.
Olivia Anderson gave up a one out double in the bottom half of the inning but that is where it ended. Anderson struck out the next two batters to secure her 5th win of the season. The come from behind win demonstrated the strength of this Eagles team.
The Eagles now get to take 2 weeks off before returning for two key league games after the break. Great coaching, hard work, and team depth throughout the lineup has the Eagles off to a great start to the 2024 season. The team wrapped up the first third of their season ranked number 1 in San Diego Division IV and number in 9 overall in the San Diego section. Come out and support the team after break!
