The Varsity Softball team added another W to their record today with a 16 to 1 decision over Coastal Academy. With the win the Eagles improved their record to 13 – 0 – 1. They sit atop the Coastal League with a 7 and 0 record in league play.
The combination of dominating pitching and depth at the plate continues to power this team. They opened the game today with a four-run effort in the top of the first inning. Maya Tyszkiewicz and Bryn Henson opened the game with back-to-back walks. Both then scored on Olivia Anderson’s double. Maddie Binnie followed that with a double of her own scoring Anderson. Torin Bennett’s single brought Binnie home, and the Eagles had a four-run lead before recording their first out.
The second inning saw more of the same as Kayla Emond reached on a hit by pitch and Tyszkiewicz followed with a single. With two runners on Anderson delivered a three-run homer to centerfield, her fourth home run of the season. For Anderson it brought her RBI total for the day to five, leading all SFC batters. Following two more walks to Binnie and Bennett (SFC would amass 10 walks in the game), Hannah Muscat drove in the Eagles eighth run on an infield single.
The Eagles added a ninth run in the top of the fourth when Aspen Lee walked with the bases loaded bring home Binnie. Coastal Academy got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Coastal loaded the bases on a single and two walks but Bennett pitched her way out of trouble allowing just one run and the only two hits Coastal Academy would have on the day.
The Eagles put the finishing touches on the game in the top of the fifth bringing 13 batters to plate and delivering a seven-run inning. Two walks and a hit by pitch to the first 3 batters of the inning loaded the bases. Bennett’s sacrifice fly brought Henson home. Muscat then singled home Binnie and Anderson bringing her RBI total on the day to three. Kayla Crecion reached base on an error. Following a double steal, Samantha Kim drove home two runs with a double to centerfield. After a Tyszkiewicz single, Henson came to the plate for the second time in the inning and delivered a double scoring Kim. A Maddie Binnie line drive resulted in an error by the short stop scoring Tyszkiewicz and bringing the run total to 16 for the game. It was the Eagles largest run total of the season.
The offensive box score had some impressive results on it for the Eagles today. The Eagles had 13 hits spread across nine players as their depth at the plate showed through. The team had five extra base hits; four doubles and a home run. Anderson led the team in RBIs with 5, Muscat had 3. Four Eagles had two hit days. The Eagles top four batters scored 12 runs; Binnie touched home four times, Tyszkiewicz and Anderson each scored 3 times and Henson scored twice.
The offensive explosion by the Eagles was matched in quality by the pitching effort of Torin Bennett who gave up just one run and two hits on the day. Bennet struck out 10 of the 21 batters she faced while walking four. It was Bennett’s fifth win of the season and another great outing for the Junior pitcher who seems to get better with each game she pitches.
The Eagles now head out to Escondido Charter for what could be their most important game of the year. The White Tigers are second in the Coastal League with a 6 and 1 record, their only league loss coming at the hands of the SFC Eagles in a tight 3 to 2 decision earlier in the season. The Tigers are on a seven-game win streak since their loss to SFC in March and have a 14 and 4 record overall. The Friday night match up could play a big role in deciding who the Coastal League champions will be in 2024. Let’s get behind our ladies and support them this Friday at 4 pm at Escondido Charter. The team will wrap up the week on Saturday morning with a game at Coronado.
