The Santa Fe Christian Men’s Lacrosse team suffered a one goal loss to the Mullen Mustangs from Denver, Colorado yesterday by a score of 5-6. The Eagles are now 2-2 on the season.
The Eagles led the game 4-2 after the first half and 5-2 at the end of the 3rd quarter. SFC shut-out the Mustangs in the 3rd quarter with Sam Cooper (Senior) saving all six of Mullen’s shots on goal in the 3rd period. However, SFC gave up 4 goals in the 4th quarter and could not find the back of the net on offense leading to the one goal loss.
Bobby Berg (Senior) led SFC with 3 goals with Brendon DeBont (Senior) and Colton Lehberg (Senior) each scoring a goal. DeBont also added an assist.
Mullen outshot the Eagles with 30 shots as compared to 27 shots by SFC. Mullen also had more shots on goal of 21 vs. only 12 shots on goal for the Eagles. Sam Cooper had an outstanding day between the pipes logging 15 saves on 21 shots on goal (71%).
The Eagles’ defense caused 4 turnovers with each of DJ Tovtin (Senior), Bobby Berg, Colton Lehberg and Ben Wakeham (Freshman) causing 1 turnover.
At the face-off X, Colton Lehberg started off a bit slow losing the first two face-offs and then proceeded to win 12 of the next 13. The 12 face-off wins were not enough to overcome 20 turnovers by the Eagles.
A special thanks to Amy and Dean Wakeham for hosting an amazing post-game taco night for both teams and their parents. A special treat for a team that traveled from Colorado.
The Eagles have a week off as their next game is not until Saturday March 26th at SFC. The game is against the Lakewood Tigers, another team from Colorado. The Tigers, like Mullen, are in the 5A division in Colorado, so the game against the Tigers should also be a battle. As one SFC player put it after the Mullen game, “we have a few things to work on!” And, they have a week to do it.
