Our SFC Eagles Varsity Lacrosse Team won a hard-fought battle on Saturday against the St. Johns Mavericks who were visiting from Houston, Texas. The Eagles started off a bit slow getting down 2‑4 to the Mavericks at the end of the first quarter. But after that it was all SFC with the Eagles taking home a 13-7 victory. SFC’s record is now 2-0.
The defense led the way giving up only 3 goals to St. Johns over the final three quarters of the game, including a shut-out in the 3rd quarter. The defense was led by Seniors DJ Tovtin and Evan Bennett, Aaron Bolt (Junior), and Freshmen Ben Wakeham and Johnny Grimstad. Goalie Sam Cooper (Senior) had another great game minding the net with 12 saves and 2 intercepted passes. DJ also caused 2 turnovers.
Offensively the Eagles shared the ball well in their second game with 7 different players scoring goals. Brendon DeBont (Senior), Bobby Berg (Senior), and Rylan Goodwin (Senior) led the Eagles scoring attack each getting a “hat trick” (3 goals) and each also had 1 assist. Rounding out the scoring for SFC were Colton Lehberg (Senior) with 1 goal and 2 assists and Matthew Briggs (Junior), Trey Adcox (Sophomore) and Magnus Falkiewicz (Freshman) with 1 goal each.
The Eagles cut down on the number of penalties as compared to their first game (1 minute on Saturday vs. 6 minutes against La Jolla Country Day). SFC also scored on 50% of their extra man opportunities.
Colton Lehberg continued his dominance at the face-off X winning 20 out of 21 face-offs (95%).
A player for St. Johns appeared to have severely injured his knee during the game. Please pray for a speedy recovery. St. Johns also played La Jolla High School Saturday night earning a 12-3 victory over the La Jolla High. The Eagles will play La Jolla later in the season.
