This is the 3rd of 3 special editions of the Talon SFC Football News. There is more to accomplish for this team and these players with the playoffs coming up and we will publish more information after the CIF Championship Game.
In this edition we focus on defensive and special teams stats. As noted previously, it must be acknowledged that football is the ultimate team sport and one team member’s success stems from the fact that the other 10 guys on the field did their job and the coaches put together winning game plans. That is, interceptions are not made without a good pass rush and extra points require a team effort – snapper, holder, the line blocking, and the kick. Thank you to the players and coaches that enable the following individuals to shine statistically.
Below are some interesting defensive and special teams statistics that spotlight SFC players and how they stack up in San Diego, in CIF Division III, in the Coastal League. These stats are based on information in MaxPreps as of October 28, 2021 and only reflect what SFC and other schools have reported on and prior to that date.
Defense: MaxPreps has 3 different statistics for Defense: Tackles, Sacks, and Interceptions. Here are some interesting stats for SFC players:
Tackles: Luca Torti ranked #8 in the Coastal League with 49 tackles. Three more tackles and he would have been in the top 5 in the Coastal League. Dante Rotchford was tied for 9th in the Coastal League with 48 tackles.
Sacks: Luke Heggie ranked 5th in San Diego and 2nd in DIII with 8.5 sacks. Dante Rotchford logged 5 sacks for 6th in DIII and 4th in the Coastal League. Chase Wetzel was tied for 10th in the Coastal League with 3 sacks.
Interceptions: In the SFC defense intercepted 11 passes during the regular season. Brendon DeBont, Kevin Olah and Zack Marshall each had 3 interceptions during the regular season. This ranked them tied for 14th in the County and tied for 3rd in the Coastal League and in DIII.
Special Teams: MaxPreps has 8 different statistics for Special Teams: Field Goals, PAT, Kick Scoring, Punts, Punt Returns, Kickoff, Kickoff Returns and Total Returns. However, many teams do not report statistics on punting, kickoff, and kicks returns. Here are some interesting for kicking stats.
A+ / 100%. The team of Ben Coons (long snapper), Thomas Greupner (holder), O-Line, and Colton Lehberg (kicker) did not miss a field goal attempt or extra point attempt during the regular season. For kickers with more than 20 attempted extra points, Colton is the only kicker in San Diego county that made 100% of his PAT tries. Snap, hold, and kick… Remarkable.
Kick Scoring: Keeping up with SFC’s kicking tradition, Colton is tied for 12th in the State with 54 kicking points (45 PATs and 3 field goals). He is ranked 1st in San Diego County in this statistical category. Way to go Colton.
Point After Touchdown (PAT): Colton made 45 PATs which is ranked 10th in the State. He is tied for 1st in San Diego County in PATs.
Field Goals: Colton made 3 field goals from 30, 34, and 39 yards. This is tied for 9th in San Diego County, tied for 3rd in DIII and 1st in Coastal League. However, MaxPreps only identifies 3 Coastal League teams that made field goals – SFC, Orange Glen, and Francis Parker. The statistics do not say whether a team tried any field goals but did not make any.
Congrats to these players, their teammates that enabled this success, and the coaching staff for putting together winning game plans.
