The Eagles Varsity Softball team completed the trifecta on Friday registering their third shut out of the week in a hard fought 4 - 0 win over league rival Maranatha. The team enjoyed outstanding pitching all week long and some lively bats gave the Eagles a 28 to 0 scoring advantage for the week, enabling them to maintain their first place position atop the Coastal League.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Maya Tyszkiewicz walked and then stole second base. For Tyszkiewicz it was her first of two steals on the day, adding to her team leading 21 steals on the year. Olivia Anderson then hit a deep fly ball to centerfield and Tyszkiewicz scored from second on the sacrifice fly showing great speed on the bases. Anderson and Tyszkiewicz are both batting .500 for the year and Tyszkiewicz has a team leading .533 on base percentage.
In the bottom of the third the Eagles fabricated a run with more hustle on the bases. Anderson and Maddie Binnie drew back to back walks. A double steal put them on second and third. Anderson then scored on a wild pitch giving the Eagles their second run of the day.
In the bottom of the fifth the Eagles struck for two more runs. Tyszkiewicz led off with a single. Anderson got on base when center fielder Piper Barela drop a fly ball allowing Tyszkiewicz to score. Bryn Henson then doubled bringing home Anderson. It was Henson's team leading seventh double of the season. The four runs were hard earned against Lillian Visser who pitched 6 strong innings for Maranatha, striking out 10 while taking the loss.
For the Eagles it was their third strong pitching performance of the week, this time with Anderson and Torin Bennett combining for a one hitter in a seven inning shut out. Anderson picked up the win going five innings and striking out 7 batters. Bennett then came on in relief and struck out 4 of the 6 batters she faced wrapping up the Eagles third shut out of the week. It was win number 8 for Anderson this season.
The Eagles are now 12 - 0 - 1 on the season and sit atop the Coastal League standings. They head out on the road for three games this week, including two important league games against Coastal Academy (Wednesday) and Escondido Charter (Friday). The Eagles wrap up the week on Saturday in Coronado.
